CEFR French language levels

Find out how to learn French according to the international levels of the CEFR. Choose your level and discover what you can understand, say and write at that level, how many modules it comprises and which course is right for you.

Which level is best for me?

Our courses are structured according to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).  Click on a level for a full description.

A1

A1 - Beginner

You understand and use simple words and phrases in everyday situations.

A2

A2 - elementary

You can talk about your routine, your environment, and familiar topics.

B1

B1 - Intermediate

You participate in simple conversations and can express your experiences and opinions.

B2

B2 - Self-employed

You understand more complex texts and communicate spontaneously with native speakers.

C1

C1 - advanced

You express yourself with ease, nuance and professionalism in complex situations.

How does our training work by level?

Our courses follow the international structure of the CEFR. You learn at your own pace thanks to clearly structured modular courses.

Preliminary interview and level assessment

Before you begin, you will take a free online test and a brief admission interview. This allows us to determine your exact level (A1-C1).

20-hour modules

Each level comprises one or more 20-hour modules. You can take the modules separately or complete the entire course in one go.

Learn at your own pace

We take into account your objectives, your availability and your prior knowledge. You start where you are and progress from there.

A1 - Beginner

You may introduce yourself.
You use simple sentences.
You understand the basic information.
You write short messages.

A2 - elementary

You can have simple conversations on familiar topics.
You understand short texts and practical information.
You use sentences in the past and future tenses at a basic level.
You write simple texts such as emails or descriptions.

B1 - Intermediate

You find it easier to discuss work, family, leisure activities and current affairs.
You understand longer texts and the main idea of conversations.
You clearly express your opinions and experiences.
You write coherent texts such as reports or long emails.

B2 - Self-employed

You speak spontaneously and naturally with native speakers.
You understand complex texts dealing with concrete and abstract topics.
You reason, argue and nuance in conversations.
You write clear, well-structured texts on a variety of topics.

C1 - advanced

You understand complex and demanding texts and recognise subtle implications.
You express yourself with ease and spontaneity, without searching for words.
You present clear and well-structured arguments during interviews.
You write clear and coherent texts, using an appropriate style and tone.
